Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky Gut Syndrome is characterized by the hyper-permeability of the intestines. Our mainstream medical community is now finally acknowledging it as a medical condition, describing it as a medical mystery. Leaky gut is not something taught in medical schools and often leaves doctors perplexed by patients symptoms, when they fail being able to diagnose it as a more common ailment. This disorder leads to overwhelming systemic conditions in the body. It is the beginning of the body breaking down from the inside out.

Linda A. Lee MD, is a gastroenterologist and director of the Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine and Digestive Center. She was quoted saying, “We don’t know a lot but we know that it (Leaky Gut) exists. In the absence of evidence, we don’t know what it means or what therapies can directly address it.” Another gastroenterologist Donald Kirby MD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic, says, “From an MD’s standpoint, it’s a grey area. Physicians don’t know enough about the gut, which is our biggest immune system organ.”

This sleeping giant, identified as Leaky Gut Syndrome, has the power to destroy our health, causing a host of diseases associated with the condition. In a nutshell the pores of your intestines become larger and can no longer screen out larger undigested food, yeasts, toxins and other forms of bodily waste. Now these toxins are able to pass straight into your bloodstream and flow freely throughout your body. Because your liver can’t keep up with the tremendous task of fighting off these immune invaders, all of the yeast and toxic junk accumulates in your system. At this point your immune system goes into overdrive, causing further inflammation. You know how the saying goes, you might have won the battle but you did not win the war. Similarly to this saying, your immune system is so focused on winning the war of Leaky Gut that it can’t focus on the smaller battles. The battles are your daily germs, viruses, allergens and environmental toxins. Now the path has been laid for autoimmune disorders such as, IBD, MS, Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia to take over. Your highly agitated immune system isn’t done wreaking havoc yet, now the foods you once tolerated now trigger allergic, antagonistic reactions in the body. Chemical sensitivities from foods and skin care products, are now running rampant. If this all sounds like a scary big deal to you, then I’ve hit the nail on the head! It is an epidemic, the gut is the root to all illnesses.

There are over 10,000 research papers published on increased intestinal permeability, tying it to other conditions such as IBS, Autoimmune Disorders, Heart Disease, Acne and Depression. You would think that doctors would be quicker to diagnose their patients with Leaky Gut and give them the resources needed to repair the damaged intestinal linings. There is hope in healing! The reason I am sure these mainstream doctors fail to take this diagnosis out the the “grey area” box, is because there is no profit to be made on the treatment. The Big Pharmaceutical Companies, Physicians and Monsanto have no profit to be made on turning their patients on to real, whole-foods and alternative therapies. If people knew they could turn to their cupboards instead of their pharmacies, the mainstream medical organizations would go bankrupt. Supplements made from whole-foods and herbs are of no benefit to these organizations either. Integrative treatments cultivated from nature is directly therapeutic to our body. The results from making necessary nutrition and lifestyle changes prove to have remarkable results.

Culturally our society is obsessed with the idea of quick fixes, single causes, and popping your physician prescribed pills. However, we didn’t dig ourselves into this mess overnight. It’s caused by years of nutritional and environmental oversight. If you are ready to use nutrition therapeutically and reclaim your health, then you have already made the first step. I would love to dedicate myself to supporting you in your journey towards health and wellness. Nutritional counseling is my passion. If you are already on a clean, real-food diet and you avoid NSAIDs and have learned to manage stress…yet you are still having GI symptoms that points toward leaky gut, then there is more work to do. Through muscle testing and diagnostic diets formulated to heal and identify allergies and sensitivities, together we can get to the root of your ailments and help you restore wellness.
